Destiny 2: Bungie Confirms Trials Of Osiris Return; Watch Bungie's Live Stream

Destiny 2's Empyrean Foundation community event is complete, and with its end comes confirmation of something players have suspected for a while now: the Trials of Osiris is returning to the game with Destiny 2's next content season. News of the Empyrean Foundation's completion came with a livestream from Bungie that ran down a few details about what we can expect from the return of Trials.

Bungie announced that players had completed the Empyrean Foundation quest on its Destiny 2 Twitter feed. We also found out the name of Destiny 2's next season: the Season of the Worthy.

The end of the event also unlocked a new cutscene players can access in the Tower by interacting with the Obelisk, which has been the center of the Empyrean Foundation event.

If you're not familiar, the Trials of Osiris was Destiny and Destiny 2's pinnacle PvP event that only ran during weekends. The upcoming version will challenge teams of three players to some of the toughest battles in the game. Jumping into the match provides you with a scorecard, with the goal of winning as many matches as possible in a row; the idea is to try to complete seven total matches without losing more than three. Along with just surviving, players also have to deal with the fact that Power levels are enabled--meaning if you have stronger weapons and armor than your opponents, earned from doing Destiny's toughest activities, you go into the fight with an advantage. Managing to complete a Trials scorecard nets you some of Destiny and Destiny 2's coolest rewards.

The loot is even better, however, if you can manage to go "flawless" and win seven straight Trials matches. In Destiny 1, that earned you the opportunity to visit the Lighthouse, a special location that dished out some of the rarest and coolest weapons and armor in the game. (Destiny 2 had its own spin, the Trials of the Nine, which was a four-player version of the event and included a different special location for winners.) Trials was removed from Destiny 2 way back in August 2018, so it's been a long while since we've had the opportunity to take on one of the game's greatest challenges.

According to Bungie's livestream, that original Trials gear from Destiny 1 is set to return with the new Trials of Osiris. If you manage to go flawless, your special Trials armor will react so that other players can see your accomplishment for that week wherever you go. It also looks as though Trials-themed weapons will make their return with the new mode. The new Trials will also bring back three maps from the original Destiny: Cauldron, Exodus Blue, and Anomaly.

On Twitter, Destiny 2 director Luke Smith teased a few other details about the new Trials, including tweaks to matchmaking that will sort you into matches against people in a similar situation. If you're close to completing your scorecard, for instance, you'll be facing players who are also reaching the end of the line--which could make the battles even more desperate and intense.

Trials of Osiris is set to make its return on March 13, the weekend after the start of the Season of the Worthy on March 9.
