Rise Of Skywalker References A Recording You Could Only See In Fortnite

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in theaters now, bringing a close to both the decades-long "Skywalker Saga" and the new trilogy under Disney. The franchise has a long history, but one significant piece of fiction was exclusive to an in-game event in Fortnite. Spoilers follow.

The opening crawl of the new Star Wars film references a mysterious broadcast threatening revenge, delivered from the voice of the presumed-dead Emperor Palpatine. This is the catalyst for the events of the film to follow, but the broadcast is never heard in the movie. For that, you need to have dropped onto Fortnite's island for a special Star Wars-themed event on Saturday, December 14.

"At last the work of generations is complete," the message said. "The great error is corrected. The day of victory is at hand. The day of revenge. The day of the Sith!"

You can watch the Fortnite event where the message was delivered below, and sure enough, it sounds like Palpatine.

Having missed the message doesn't severely impact Rise of Skywalker, since the opening crawl description explains it well enough. Still, it's a slight nugget of expanded fiction that crosses into an entirely separate medium, which is unusual.

The Fortnite event also included TIE Whisper gliders debued exclusive footage. For more on Rise of Skywalker, check out our list of Easter eggs from past movies. Plus read GameSpot's review, which called it a "galactic disappointment."
