Where To Get A VR Headset In Time Before Half-Life: Alyx Is Out

One of the biggest games of 2020, Half-Life: Alyx, is a VR-only game. We'll see whether that means people will begin taking VR more seriously, or if it means the game won't sell as well as it otherwise would. In the meantime, if you're dying to play a new single-player game from Valve this year, we've rounded up all the headsets compatible with Alyx, and where you can get them before the game releases in March. Of course, there are other VR games on the horizon, too, like Phantom: Covert Ops and Marvel's Iron Man VR, and we'll cover all of the headsets that are compatible with them, including Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR.

The best VR deals going on right now is for the all-in-one Oculus Quest, which proved so popular during Black Friday that it's still sold out or accepting back-orders at many retailers. However, if you can find an Oculus Quest before January 31, you'll get all three episodes of Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series as long as you activate your headset within 30 days of purchasing it. Amazon's stock of the the 128 GB and 64 GB options is dry for now, but Oculus is accepting back-orders on both versions, though it'll be a little while before the headsets actually arrive.

Oculus Quest (64GB/128GB) with Vader Immortal | $400/$500

Available for back-order; compatible with Half-Life: Alyx

The unit is currently only available from third-party vendors at Amazon. Oculus, on the other hand, is accepting back-orders for both the 64 GB version and 128 GB version. The 128GB version is ready to ship by February 27, while the 64GB version will ship before March 2, which should be just in time for Half-Life: Alyx. The Oculus Quest doesn't need to connect to a PC, which gives you full freedom to move within your designated space. However, if you're interested in plugging it into a PC, Oculus recently introduced Oculus Link, which lets you connect your Quest to a PC with a high-quality USB 3.0 cable (which is the only way to play Half-Life: Alyx on the device right now).

You can see all of the best VR deals below. We know there's interest in Half-Life: Alyx, so we've made a note of pointing out which ones will be ready to go for its March release date.

VR deals and discounts

Samsung HMD Odyssey+ | Starting at $304.50 ($500)

Compatible with Half-Life: Alyx

The Samsung HMD Odyssey+ is a great headset, especially at this price. As far as Windows Mixed Reality headsets go, this is the best one. You get two free months of Viveport Infinity, a VR game subscription service, with your purchase, and there's also a huge library of compatible games on Steam, including the upcoming Half-Life: Alyx. Amazon has discounts from third-party retailers starting as low as $304.50.

HTC Vive Cosmos | $700

Compatible with Half-Life: Alyx

The Vive Cosmos is HTC's first headset with inside-out tracking, something that Oculus has adopted for both the Quest and Rift S. That means you don't need any sensors to use the Cosmos; however, unlike the Quest, you will need to plug it into a PC to power it. In addition to the headset and controllers, it comes with a six-month subscription to Viveport Infinity, a service that grants players access to a library of VR games and experiences.

PlayStation VR 5-Game Mega Pack | $300

This PlayStation VR bundle was very popular during Black Friday, and while it's not discounted anymore, it's still an excellent bundle you should grab if you're looking to invest in PlayStation VR. Amazon is currently accepting orders, with stock available on February 10. It includes the PSVR headset, PlayStation Camera, and five of the platform's best games: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Skyrim VR, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Everybody's Golf VR, and PlayStation VR Worlds.

Oculus Go (32GB) | $149/$200 ($199/$250)

The Oculus Go headset's focus is more on media viewing. It's a great headset for watching movies, shows, and other videos, but you won't be able to play any of the games on Steam. Amazon has the 32 GB version of the headset discounted to $149, while the 64 GB option, is $200, though it won't ship until later this month.
